Concept-Haiti Kidney Foundation: A Critical Need

The Haiti Kidney Foundation is a critical need because the number of dialysis patients in Haiti is grossly underestimated. Based on global averages, Haiti should have approximately 64,800 dialysis patients, yet only 225 are currently receiving treatment. This means that thousands of Haitians are dying needlessly from kidney disease. The Haiti Kidney Foundation aims to provide free dialysis treatment to Haitian citizens both in Haiti and the diaspora, in order to address this critical need.

The dire situation facing Haitians with kidney disease is due to a combination of factors:
  • Economic Hardship and Limited Insurance: The crushing weight of poverty, affecting over 59% of Haitians, coupled with limited or insufficient insurance coverage, makes the cost of dialysis, which requires multiple sessions per week, financially unattainable.

  • Lack of Awareness: Many Haitians with kidney disease are unaware of the options available to them, often due to limited access to healthcare information, particularly in rural areas, and a shortage of trained medical professionals

  • Limited Access to Facilities: Dialysis centers are concentrated in urban areas, making it difficult for those in rural communities to access treatment, even if they can afford it.

These converging factors create a perfect storm, leaving thousands of Haitians with kidney disease without access to life-saving treatment.

These devastating realities underscore the urgent need for intervention. The Haiti Kidney Foundation provides a lifeline, offering free dialysis that can save hundreds, potentially thousands, of lives and dramatically improve the quality of life for Haitians with kidney disease.

Free dialysis offers more than just survival; it provides the opportunity for Haitians with kidney disease to regain their health, dignity, and a chance to live full and productive lives.

Events

The Haiti Kidney Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with kidney disease in Haiti by providing access to quality healthcare, education, and support services. Founded by Alex Parent, a native Haitian who returned to his homeland after 30 years as a dialysis technician, the Foundation is deeply rooted in the Haitian community. Our team of dedicated professionals, including Dr. Myrtile Laférièrre, a respected Nephrologist, and Dr. Irdele Lubin, a PhD in Social Services, brings a wealth of expertise and compassion to our work. Dr. Lubin's personal experience with kidney disease, as her late husband was a dialysis patient, gives her firsthand insight into the struggles faced by individuals and families. We are committed to providing comprehensive care, including dialysis treatments, medications, and nutritional support, as well as educational programs and emotional support services.

Through our partnerships with local healthcare providers and government agencies, we strive to expand access to kidney care throughout Haiti. We believe that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, deserves the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilling life

Join us in our mission to make a difference in the lives of Haitians with kidney disease.
